Where the Barnes name comes from

Barnes grew out of Old English and Old Norse, and the accounts of where it began do not agree. One line traces it to Old English beorn, meaning warrior, a word itself taken from Old Norse. Another makes it plainer work, an occupational name for someone who worked in a barn or a topographic one for someone who lived near a barn. A third route is the place on the bank of the Thames in Surrey, whose name comes from the same root as the noun barn.

As a variant of Barne, the surname carried a Middle English personal name from Old Norse Bjorn and Old English Beorn, and it also stood for the noun barn in its older sense of child. In Ireland it arrived by a different road entirely, Anglicized from O Bearain, descendant of Bearan, a byname built on bior, the word for spear. In France the same spelling turns up as a variant of Bernes, from a short form of a Germanic name derived from Frankish bero, bear, the element behind Bernhard. At the British census of 1881 the name sat thickest in Dorset at 2.9 times the national average, then Wiltshire and Cumberland.
