Where the Chavez name comes from

Chavez comes from Chaves, a town in the north of Portugal about six miles from the Spanish border. The Romans had it first as Aquae Flaviae, the waters of Flavius, which is why the name traces to the Latin Flaviae rather than to any Spanish word. Chaves remains the Portuguese spelling of the surname and Chavez the Spanish one. A Roman spa town has ended up on front doors across two continents.
