Where the Greene name comes from

Greene is an English surname that came out of Middle English. It began as a variant spelling of Green, keeping a final e that the plain form dropped. A community in the town of Coventry, Rhode Island, takes its name from Nathanael Greene, who was born in that state. Many other places across the United States were named after him as well.
