Where the Hall name comes from

Hall is Anglo-Celtic and means exactly what it looks like: the family lived or worked at the hall, the big house of the place. The same surname exists in German, Norwegian, Danish and Swedish, all from the same noun, and in Sweden it was probably reinforced by a near-identical word meaning a slab of rock. There is a Chinese Hall as well, an alternative romanisation of two different Chinese surnames that sound nothing like the English one. Three unrelated languages, one spelling on the door.
