Where the Lopez name comes from

Lopez is son of Lope, and Lope is a Spanish given name from the Latin lupus, a wolf. So the name says, quite plainly, son of the wolf. The same idea produced Lopes in Portuguese and Galician, Lupo in Italian, Loup in French, Lupu and Lupescu in Romanian, and Llopis in Catalan. Basque skips the Latin altogether and uses its own word for the animal, giving Otxo.
