Where the Mitchell name comes from

Mitchell has three separate origins, which is a lot even for a name this common. Most often it is the Middle English and Norman French Michel, the everyday form of Michael, and Michael is a Hebrew name that asks a question: who is like God? In other families it is the Middle English michel or muchel, meaning big, so the name was a remark about size rather than about faith. Mitchel with one l is the same surname.
