Where the Patterson name comes from

Patterson means son of Patrick. The name formed in Middle English, joining Pate, a short form of Patrick, to the suffix -son. It took hold as a patronymic surname in Scotland, Northern England and Ireland. The same root produced Pattison and Pattinson. Paterson and Patteson stand alongside them as further spellings of the one name.
