Where the Robinson name comes from

Robinson means son of Robin, and Robin was the everyday form of Robert, so the name is a nickname twice over before it settles down. Robert is Frankish, from hrod, fame, and berht, bright, and the -in on the end is a French diminutive, which is why Robin is still a very common surname in France. It ranks 15th among surnames in the United Kingdom, and in Ireland it belongs above all to Ulster, where it and Robison were used interchangeably around 1900. Robeson is the same name again.
