Where the Stevens name comes from

Stevens means son of Steven, a patronymic built from the given name with the suffix -s. As an English-language surname it was brought to England after the Norman Conquest. Dutch carries its own Stevens, formed the same way from Steven and the same patronymic ending. That Dutch line runs through a long set of variant spellings, among them Stevense, Stevensen, Stevenssen, Stevensz and Steevens.
