Where the Vazquez name comes from

Vazquez is a surname that came out of Galician and passed into Spanish as Vázquez. From those Galician beginnings it spread across the whole of the Spanish-speaking world. Along the way it picked up several spellings, including Vásquez, Vázquez and Vasques, the last found mostly in regions whose Spanish has seseo.

Vazquez and Vasquez, written without the accent, are the forms used in countries where Iberian languages are not commonly spoken. In the 2010 United States Census, Vazquez ranked as the 203rd most common surname in the country. That census counted 138,322 people carrying it.
