About the Lifebuoy design

Four wedge openings sit on the diagonals, which leaves the solid steel crossing top to bottom and side to side rather than corner to corner. Each wedge narrows to a blunt inner end and widens along a curve that runs parallel to the rim, stopping short of it so the outer band stays whole. A plain round hole marks the center, and the four solid arms swell where they meet it, so the hub reads as a circle laid over the cross.
