About the sign
One character, cut from a single sheet of steel. The letter X is the whole sign: there is no backing plate and no border, so the shape on the wall is the character itself.
Five Art Nouveau typefaces to choose from, each measured against the steel at every size offered before it was drawn for sale.

About the Art Nouveau Letter X design
Straight crossing strokes give way to bends and pinches in these five X shapes. One version barely crosses at all, as a U-shaped cup sits on an arch and the two touch only at the waist, like a chromosome. Another bows its inner edges into an hourglass, while a brushy face flicks its upper tips and sweeps its lower left leg into a curled tail. Two calmer faces keep true diagonals, one ending in flat bracketed serifs and the other in rounded, pill-shaped feet.
