About the sign
One character, cut from a single sheet of steel. The number 1 is the whole sign: there is no backing plate and no border, so the shape on the wall is the character itself.
Five Art Nouveau typefaces to choose from, each measured against the steel at every size offered before it was drawn for sale.

About the Art Nouveau Number 1 design
Four versions sweep the flag down from the top in a soft curve, like a wave breaking off the stem, while the fifth juts out a straight plank at a steep angle. The heaviest flares its stem at the base like a tree trunk, and another bows slightly and ends in a slanted, rounded toe that looks brushed on. The slimmest stands on a flat slab with curved brackets, and one caps its flag with a round bead above a pill-shaped foot.
