About the sign
One character, cut from a single sheet of steel. The number 9 is the whole sign: there is no backing plate and no border, so the shape on the wall is the character itself.
Five Art Nouveau typefaces to choose from, each measured against the steel at every size offered before it was drawn for sale.

About the Art Nouveau Number 9 design
Tall, egg-shaped counters sit high in most of these nines, leaving the tail to set each face apart. The two heaviest swing that tail left, one ending on a slanted cut and the other curling up into a fat ball. A light face hooks a thin tail into a small ball, while another tucks a ball against the stem at the base of its bowl and ends its tail on a second one. The fifth drops a long straight diagonal with a squared-off tip.
