About the Pencil and Ruler design

The pencil runs corner to corner with its blunt end rounded off like a thumb, and that solid mass stops where the ruler crosses it, the rest dropping to a narrow hollow channel that ends in a squared-off tip. The ruler lies on the other diagonal as a long open frame, its markings cut in as square notches stepped into the inner edge, one pair above the crossing and one below. Where the two meet, the pencil lies on top and the ruler's band breaks clean in two.
